About Surrey Group Leaders' Network

Are you involved in leading a voluntary or non-profit group, club, institution or small charity in Surrey? Surrey Group Leaders' Network is a face-to-face networking group for people who run all kinds of local groups – sports clubs, churches, small charities, social groups, hobby societies, etc. We meet once a fortnight in Surrey (often in Woking or Guildford), to share ideas, discuss problems and most importantly network with each other.

Group leaders are invited to bring their own questions, and to help each other with solutions on questions such as how to grow membership or attract volunteers, how to get the group online, and how to make organisation tasks less painful, in particular with digital tools such as interests.me (our sponsor). We aim to have a different focus each time with a 15 minute talk, but most of the time is given over to general networking. To sign up, join our mailing list and we'll make sure you hear about every meeting. We also have a presence on Meetup.com where you can RSVP for our events.

Meeting for Group Leaders - "How to find great volunteers"

The second meeting of the Surrey Group Leaders Network, on Tuesday 12th July, will be at the Phoenix Cultural Centre (whose organiser Elaine is a member of our group).

We welcome anyone who runs or helps organise a local voluntary group, club or society, or charity. Come along and meet like-minded people, and maybe learn something from each other.

We'll introduce ourselves and our organisations, and have a chance to talk about our main challenges or successes.

Because this came up so many times at the last meeting, this meeting will focus on how to find the right kind of volunteers. Please let me know if you have particular expertise to share on this and would like to share your wisdom.

We'll then network to exchange ideas, solve problems, get to know each other and explore ways to collaborate.

We'll meet at the current home of the Phoenix Cultural Centre in central Woking. We'll bring a few bottles of wine but feel free to bring your own drink(s) if you'd like anything different to tea and coffee.

Surrey Group Leaders' Network - inaugural meeting

The Surrey Group Leaders' Network announces its inaugural meeting. Be a founding member, and shape what this network becomes! This is a new face-to-face networking group for voluntary group leaders and organisers, to share best practice and talk about their problems and their solutions to problems.

For our inaugural meeting, we'll all come ready to share our Top Tip from running a group (if we have one), and also to bring our Biggest Problem.

Your Top Tip could be a "what not to do" cautionary tale, or it could be a "you've got to try this!" idea about how to make your group really work! What's worked for your group in the past, or what hasn't worked? How did your latest members find you? How do you make sure new members become regulars? What tips or tricks do you have for getting people to help out? What are your tips on running a committee or handling a trustee board? How have you raised money? What are your tips on holding events? What tools do you recommend?

If you can't think of anything, just come along to listen, and hopefully learn something.

Your Biggest Problem is just anything that you could use help or advice on. What's on your mind? Is there something worrying you? If you could wave a magic wand, what would you change about your group? What are your biggest frustrations? A problem shared is a problem halved. And who knows, there might be someone in the room who can help immediately or offer some insight or sympathy.

In addition, interests.me will be showing you how the interests.me digital groups network is shaping up, and how groups are already using it, and asking for feedback.
